Sharing with Dr. Neill Barr #2 : Discuss Final Research's Tools and Methods in Student Creativity Program

This is a summary of my mentoring session with Dr. Neill Barr. The mentoring session discussed my final research and creativity program.

My Final Research

Dr. Neill stated that the experiment I was going to do was quite simple and seemed to answer problems in the field of marine acoustics. However, some questions look confusing to think about. First, this measurement can also change the behavior of the fish that will be used as objects, how do I keep the object still when making measurements? There will be many variables that must be measured with different treatments for each parameter (bubbles, fish, measurement orientation, bubble size, fish's size and control variables). The resulting bubble must be controllable so that conclusions can be drawn about the effect of bubble size on measurement.

The following tools are suggested by Dr. Neill for my final research :

  • Micro diffuser

(This tool can control the air bubbles that will be given to the target)

  •      Air Rotameter

(The advantage of this tool is that it can measure the size of the bubbles to be produced in advance)

  •        Aeration Hose

(This tool is the same as a micro diffuser, only the dimensions, and the resulting bubbles are bigger)

  •        DIY Ceramic Diffuser

(Ceramic diffusers can be another alternative source of bubbles during research)

  •        Simulated fish

(An object substitute that has an empty space in it such as a swim bladder. So that the object is easier to research).

Student creativity program

Dr. Neill thinks that this idea is very noble to try to eliminate marine debris in Indonesia. As we all know, the problem of marine debris has become a problem for all of us internationally.

Several things must be considered in developing this idea:

  • Can the size of the AUV and ASV reduce marine debris? Even if possible, the program must be very "smart". I also agree with Dr. Neill's application of deep learning or artificial intelligence might take extra time if applied in Indonesia.

  • The problem of waste management does not have to be considered at all. It is possible to find partners who can process waste into useful products.

  • After seeing the video uploaded on YouTube, Dr. Neill began to understand what I was trying to say and would think about discussing the program I created further
